Welcome to "It Must Be Summer"

"It Must Be Summer" is back for Comfest 2013.

Started five years ago by toph and John, the group blog returns for its sixth year for Comfest 2013. Time flies. In the spirit of community that is essential to Comfest, here is a place to share your Comfest thoughts, memories, and experiences. We look forward to seeing, reading, or watching (iPhone video is STILL a dangerous and beautiful thing) whatever you'd like to share here.

If you are reading this and you didn't receive an invite to post and would like to contribute, leave a comment and John or toph will get you added.

We'll see you on the grass in the park.

Too Cute

just... too cute..,

Daniel Work

John said "Lets go see Kristina" [she played the role of the producer in Brooklyn Boy, the show John just directed]

So we followed him, because it sounded like fun... Turns out she was hanging out at Daniel Work's booth, whose "Lemon" art decorates our kitchen wall. It's always interesting to meet artists after you've purchased their work...

Daniel rocks, stop by his booth on Goodale across from the beer tent and check out his work!

the latecomers start to arrive

Jason showed up (finally) -- everyone else is late

oh, the many faces of comfest!

there are so many faces at ComFest... I see a hoola hooper, tie-dye hippies losing their hair, a woman in shorts and calf-high boots...

ComFest is truly the mix of everyone that I so rarely see anywhere else... I love ComFest for a lot of reasons, but the variety of people is high on the list.

and I don't really like people that much <grin>

First cigars - Pepin Blue Churchills

We have settled into our usual spot (25 feet back of the lamppost
halfway back of the gazebo slightly HR) and have lit em up.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

And if you're not here we can only say:

"why the hell not????"

The first Johngaritas of 2008!

And we're off!

ComFest: The Gathering

For a Friday afternoon, not a bad starter crowd really!!!

check out the sexxy lady in the cowgirl hat!

the first Cabo Wabo sniff

John is sniffing the first bottle of ComFest... for those who don't
know, the tequilla sniff is a key part of Johngarita production.. it
IS what separates Johngarita from Margarita of the same mixture...

For those who understand the difference, look at what you're missing!
For those who don't... that's just so sad...

fishboats have moved!

...from goodale to park st., FYI. Also, beware the new beer locations!

I hurt

... my smile muscles do, anyway. I'm at Comfest!!!

The Jones Brothers

ran into the Jones brothers on our way back to the apartment to get
the Johngaritas...

Makes me wonder... will I finally get to meet Drunk Brant?

First ComFest Band of 2008

or at least the first one John and I stopped to see..

The Brown Notes at the Bozo stage... we walked through the vendor
area and found a tertiary Jeni's booth up by the "I Wish You Jazz"
stage... combined with a full-fledged Jeni's across the street, we
should be set!

DAVE!!

Dave, volunteering at the Band Merch booth.... Someone has to
volunteer to keep this thing going!

You should volunteer too!

annual kickoff lunch is over!

John, with no beer

Annual kick-off lunch has begun!

Toph and Guinness.

All my bags are packed...

Unofficial photo

John will need to take an official photo for the archives when he gets around to getting here... but I got excited and just couldn't wait!

ComFest is really here, the neighborhood is hopping, the streets are blocked with cars that can't figure out where to park, Giant Eagle has its "No Event Parking" sign up, and the alcohol has been lined up on the table...

the day is finally here... and I just remembered that I need to get ice!!! gotta run!

Tonight I can't hold a pen...

Only 12 hours away!

My god, we are finally almost there.

The Plan:

In the morning, I'll be at the Phoenix sitting on an audition panel, then I will leave promptly at 12:15 and toph will pick me up at my place at 12:25. We will head to his place and drop my gear and then walk over to Mac's for our annual kick-off lunch (~12:45). Once we have had Guinness and burgers at Mac's we will hit the fest. Mugs and koozies will be quickly procured.

Then we'll probably find the most interesting act at whatever time that is (2ish) and park there while we drink our first beer. Then it will be back to toph and Jill's to grab the gear, mix some Johngaritas, and set-up base camp.

See you in the park. We'll be the guys with the ear-to-ear grins.

ComFest vs. Tom Waits

Hmmm.... I just found out that I scored a free pair of tickets to see Tom Waits from the center of the 14th row Saturday night at the Ohio Theatre. I really hate to miss even an hour of ComFest, but Tom is a legend. And last time I saw him I paid about $400 for a pair of crappy seats, and thought it was worth every penny. So, I'm gonna have to skip out for an evening. But while I'm gone, may I suggest you check out the following acts on Saturday evening:

Jason Quicksall - earnest singer songwriter
Tony Monaco - excellent jazz
El Jesus de Magico - whiskey soaked hipster rock
Hugs & Kisses - you have to see it. no, srsly.
bacKspace - modern dance meets drag
Oh-La-Las - burlesque

Oh wait, I have to miss Hugs & Kisses? Damn. That really does suck.

FYI - I'm volunteering at the Band Merch Booth on Friday 1-4 - it's about halfway between the usual camp and the Jeni's cart.

See ya @ noon on Friday @ the Bozo for 1.3! Or maybe MadLab related Woosley Band @ the Offramp? I dunno, it's all just toooo much.
